Aerobatic aircraft that perform inverted flight require special oil systems to prevent engine damage. Regular engines rely on gravity to keep oil in the oil pan, but when flying upside down, the oil would flow away from the pickup tube. Aerobatic planes use either dry sump systems with external oil tanks or special baffled pans with trapdoors that keep oil available to the pump regardless of aircraft orientation. Some advanced systems use multiple oil pickups positioned throughout the pan to ensure lubrication in any attitude.
