Wine bottle corks are often coated with food-grade silicone or paraffin wax before insertion to allow smooth entry without tearing the cork. This thin lubricant layer also creates a better seal and makes opening easier years later. Without it, corks would frequently break during bottling or removal. The practice became standard in commercial wineries during the mid-20th century.
