Power steering fluid evolution

Power steering fluid evolution
Early power steering systems in 1950s cars simply used automatic transmission fluid as hydraulic power steering fluid. As steering systems became more sophisticated, manufacturers developed specialized fluids with different friction properties and additives. Modern electric power steering systems are now eliminating hydraulic fluid entirely, using electric motors instead. This change saves fuel because engines no longer need to constantly power a hydraulic pump.
