Every lubricating oil has a flash point - the temperature at which its vapors can ignite when exposed to flame. Engine oils typically have flash points above 200°C (390°F), making them safe under normal operating conditions. However, when oil degrades or becomes contaminated with fuel, its flash point drops significantly, which is why mechanics sometimes test old oil by heating a sample. This property is why you should never use low-flash-point oils like cooking oil or certain vegetable oils in engines, despite their lubricating ability.
