Movie projector lubrication

Movie projector lubrication
Old movie projectors required precise lubrication to keep film moving smoothly at 24 frames per second without jamaging the celluloid. The oil had to resist heat from the intense projection lamp, which could reach temperatures high enough to literally melt the film if it jammed. Projectionists carefully oiled dozens of moving parts before every show, and the smell of hot oil mixed with film became an iconic scent of classic cinemas. Modern digital projectors eliminated most of these lubrication needs, but vintage film projectors still require this careful maintenance in specialized theaters.
