Oil dampens engine noise

Oil dampens engine noise
Most people think engine oil only reduces friction, but it also acts as a sound dampener. A thin film of oil between metal parts absorbs vibrations and prevents them from creating loud clanking noises. When oil gets old and thin, engines become noticeably louder because the cushioning effect weakens. This is one reason why fresh oil makes a car sound smoother and quieter.
