Knife sharpening oil purpose

Knife sharpening oil purpose
When sharpening a knife, oil serves a surprising dual purpose beyond just lubrication. It carries away tiny metal particles that would otherwise clog the sharpening stone's surface, keeping it effective. The oil also prevents heat buildup from friction, which could soften the blade's tempered edge and ruin its hardness. Some people use water instead, but oil stays in place longer and provides better particle suspension.
