The ice surface is actually sprinkled with tiny water droplets that freeze into "pebbles," which reduce contact area and friction. Sweeping the ice ahead of the stone melts these pebbles slightly, creating a micro-layer of water that acts as a natural lubricant. This self-lubricating system allows players to control the stone's speed and curl with remarkable precision.
