Why Brake Fluid Has Two Different Boiling Points

Here's something most people don't realize: brake fluid specifications list two completely different boiling points—and the gap between them reveals a critical safety issue. The "dry" boiling point (ERBP) measures fresh fluid straight from the bottle, while the "wet" boiling point (WERBP) measures fluid that has absorbed just 3.7% water by volume. Why does this matter? Glycol-based brake fluids are hygroscopic—they actively pull moisture from the air through microscopic pores in brake hoses and reservoir caps. Over 18-24 months in typical service, brake fluid can absorb enough moisture to drop its boiling point by 50°C or more. That's the difference between safe braking performance and catastrophic vapour lock during heavy braking. The DOT classification system evolved specifically to address this challenge, with each successive grade demanding higher minimum boiling points for both dry and wet conditions. Modern formulations like DOT 5.1 push these thresholds even higher, providing extended safety margins under extreme thermal stress.
