
Here's a lubricant chemistry puzzle that stumps many: why can't you just use any gear oil in a manual transmission? The answer lies in extreme pressure additives. GL-5 oils contain high levels of sulfur-phosphorus compounds that create a protective film under the intense pressures of hypoid differential gears. But those same additives can be corrosive to the soft yellow metals—like brass and bronze—found in manual transmission synchronizers.
GL-4 oils use gentler additives that protect synchros but may not handle the extreme loads in differentials. It's a genuine engineering trade-off: protect the gears or protect the synchros. This is why using the wrong spec can lead to grinding shifts or premature wear, even if the viscosity grade is correct.
