Car tires contain about 5-10% petroleum oils mixed into the rubber compound to keep them flexible. Over time, these oils evaporate or oxidize, which is why old tires become hard and cracked even if they haven't been driven much. This is why tire manufacturers recommend replacing tires after 6-10 years regardless of tread depth. The oil loss also explains why new tires feel grippier than older ones.
