Music box comb lubrication

Music box comb lubrication
Antique music boxes require specialized light oils that won't gum up their delicate metal combs and cylinder pins. Over-lubricating a music box is worse than under-lubricating, as excess oil attracts dust that can dampen the vibrations of the tiny tines. Clockmakers traditionally used refined whale oil, but modern restorers prefer synthetic clock oils. A properly lubricated music box can play clearly for over a century.
