Manufacturing lipstick requires special lubricants to help the waxy mixture release smoothly from metal molds. These release agents must be cosmetic-grade and leave no taste or odor on the final product. Some lipstick makers use the same silicone-based lubricants found in medical devices. The process has remained largely unchanged since the 1940s when the twist-up tube became standard.
