Engine oil consumption rates

Engine oil consumption rates
Modern engines can burn a small amount of oil during normal operation without any defect. Car manufacturers often consider oil consumption of up to one quart per 1,000 miles acceptable, especially in high-performance engines. This happens because a thin oil film on cylinder walls is deliberately left to lubricate the piston rings, and some of it evaporates or burns during combustion. Checking oil levels regularly is important because this normal consumption varies with driving style and engine temperature.
