Many ceiling fans develop a mysterious hum or wobble over time because their bearings have dried out. Most modern ceiling fans use permanently sealed bearings that never need oil, but older models often have oil ports hidden above the motor housing. A single drop of lightweight machine oil per year can transform a noisy fan back to whisper-quiet operation. The trick is finding the tiny oil hole, usually covered by a rubber plug on top of the motor!
