Castor oil racing history

Castor oil racing history
For decades, castor oil was the preferred lubricant for high-performance racing engines and early aircraft. Unlike petroleum oils, castor oil doesn't mix with gasoline, so when fuel enters the crankcase it doesn't dilute the lubricant. However, racers eventually abandoned it because castor oil forms sticky deposits and creates that distinctive sweet smell at racetracks. Modern synthetic racing oils now offer better protection without the buildup problems.
