Why Alcohol Stops Windscreen Fluid From Freezing Solid

Here's a fascinating bit of chemistry most drivers never think about: alcohol-based windscreen washer fluids work through a phenomenon called "freezing point depression." When you dissolve alcohol molecules in water, they physically disrupt the formation of ice crystals. Water molecules normally arrange themselves into a rigid lattice structure when freezing, but alcohol molecules get in the way, preventing this orderly arrangement. This means the fluid requires a much lower temperature to solidify. Ethanol has become the gold standard for winter washer fluids not just because it's highly effective at lowering freezing points, but because it's significantly safer than methanol, which was commonly used decades ago. Methanol is toxic and poses serious health risks, whereas ethanol-based formulations are far more forgiving if accidentally ingested or spilled.
